Grade 2 and 3 - Although we have had a mild winter this year, we still decided to talk about some of the fun activities we like to do in the snow. Students acted out various winter sports/activities, practiced new vocabulary, and decorated bookmarks to take home. We also took the time to learn a traditional French song (Frère Jacques) and update our cahiers. Student had an opportunity to review past French learning by visiting their favourite songs and games on the French Webpage. Grade 1 - We took a step back to review the body part vocabulary words. We had a fun time dancing to a new song (Une Patate) and adding a new page to our cahiers. We also took the time to learn a traditional French song (Frère Jacques). Student had an opportunity to review past French learning by visiting their favourite songs and games on the French Webpage. Have a wonderful Spring Break and remember to visit the French Webpage if you a bit of extra time.
It was a very busy month with a lot of special themes. La Saint Valentin was used to introduce the word aimer (to like). We had a great laugh watching Tonton being silly, and singing a song with a familiar tune. I get a kick out of the grade 3 students. Although this is the third year they have watched these particular videos, they still love them. The grade 3 students learned a bit about Canadian history when introduced to Les voyageurs. We continued to learn more clothing vocabulary words and how to add colour words to the descriptions (a red toque = une tuque rouge). Les cuillères (the spoons) were are big hit this month. We spent a bit of time talking about how to care for the spoons (no fingers between), how to hold the spoons (where the solid piece of wood is), and how to tap the spoons (gently). We also learned how to "stay" our spoons when they need to be silent. Here is the beginning of a Spoon Medley that we worked on. We learned 8 different patterns and played along with some traditional French songs. Thursday, February 18th was the centième jour de l'école (hundredth day of school) so the Grade 1 students celebrated how much smarter we are after 100 days. Students enjoyed choosing and decorating a special 100th day bookmark written in French. Grade 1 - Colours, numbers up to 20, and actions words were our focus this month. Students had a chance to practice their colour vocabulary words by adding a special page to their cahiers and playing some on the SmarBoard/computers. We also had fun reading Pat le chat. We played Action Charades and Quatre Coins. Please visit the Grade 1 webpage and check out some of the new songs and games. Grade 2 and 3 - Qu'est-ce que tu porte en hiver? (What do you wear in winter?) In December, we learned some vocabulary words related to the types of clothing that Santa wears. This month, we continued with this clothing theme by looking at what we wear in Canada in the winter, and making some petits livres (mini-books). Students had a chance to review vocabulary by singing our favourite songs, playing games, and checking out the webpage. Welcome back. Thank you for the lovely gifts. They made me feel so special. My family and I had a wonderful break. Part of acquiring a second language is having opportunities to use familiar vocabulary. We often take time to review some of our favourite activities after such a long break. Please feel free to visit the webpage with your child(ren). A little bit of French each day is an ideal way of keeping the skills fresh. We have had a fun week learning how to sing a couple of French Christmas songs, and watching the antics of Tonton. We will be singing the songs during the Wednesday's Carol singing in the gym (starts at 2:15 pm). Students have been encouraged to visit the webpage and practice the songs at home. Here are the quick links -- Quand le père Noël and Le gentil Père Noël.
It has been a very exciting week. The students have done a fabulous job of making videos to upload to IRIS. We will continue this in the first part of next week as some students need a bit more time to complete this project. Ask your child if they have had a chance to upload a video. You can watch it at home by signing into IRIS. To log into IRIS, your child uses their 9 (or 8) digit code for the username. (The older students have this number memorized. For the younger students, you can find this CBE number on your child's report card from previous years.) Each student should know their password. Grade 1 students continue to learn the different body parts in French. They are also becoming familiar with colour words. Check out the new videos on the grade 1 webpage. Grade 2 and 3 students are reviewing the colour words and learning the names for different pieces of winter clothing.
It was wonderful to talk to parents last week during our Parent-Teacher Conferences. I am also pleased to know that the children are having a lot of fun learning French, and like to visit the webpage when at home. A positive attitude goes a long way when learning a second language and I would like to thank all of the parents who share their child's enthusiasm. Even with our short weeks, students had a chance to learn more Halloween related vocabulary through songs, dance and games.
